Success Case

Wind Turbine Safety

Smart Disaster Prevention Solutions for Wind Turbine facilities.

Taiwan has an abundant wind resource, driving the growth of clean, green energy. According to a report by the International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS), there are over 100 reported fire incidents in wind turbine units globally each year, with unreported cases possibly exceeding 1,000. This case involves a site that established two wind turbine units in 2003, one of which was damaged by a fire. In 2022, the site installed GKB's smart disaster prevention system, creating the world's first smart disaster prevention for wind turbine units.

Client Needs

  • The high cost of wind turbine units necessitates early disaster detection and effective linkage with extinguishing devices to minimize damage.
  • The height or offshore location of wind turbine units makes them difficult to access, requiring the ability to detect anomalies promptly.
  • Moving towards smart deployment and upgrading disaster management.

Key Issue

  • Wind turbine units average around 80-100 meters in height, making patrols challenging.
  • When maintenance personnel leave the central control room for other tasks, notifications during abnormal events are difficult.
  • Extinguishing fires during abnormal events is challenging.

Solutions

  • Establish VFDS that combines multiple detections for flames, smoke, and abnormal high temperatures.
  • Utilize the VFDS PLUS front-end detection management software to sense fires and integrate extinguishing devices.
  • Implement an active image notification mechanism to promptly inform personnel during disasters.
